Arrested Development Piracy Causes 100,000 Potential Arrests

Posted: 30 May 2013 12:44 PM PDT

The return of hit former Fox sitcom Arrested Development is a current topic of discussion amongst critics for its quality, but there is no denying the draw that it brings to subscription streaming provider Netflix for the exclusive revival, as even those without subscriptions to the platform are left desperate to get their hands (or rather, eyes) on the content.

arrested_development_wantedIt was recently revealed by a number of BitTorrent trackers that in the first 24 hours since the entire fourth season of Arrested Development was uploaded to Netflix on Sunday (26 May), the show was illegally downloaded 100,000 times.

While representing a high level of interest in the sitcom (which now has over 175,000 illegal downloads to its name since the weekend), the statistics are believed to be one which disproves the theory that lack of accessibility means an increase of piracy, as of the top 5 countries responsible for the dubious viewing methods, only Australia (in 2nd place with 15%) were a market not covered by Netflix, ahead of Canada (11.8%), the UK (5.9%), and Sweden (2%).

The USA, home country of Netflix and Arrested Development (which after its launch has been strongly hinted to have another new season planned, should the cast commit to it), is also the home to the most pirates of the show, though based on proportion of viewers to population Australia would be the most prolific of the five.

The numbers have lead to increased campaigning from Australian consumer organisations to see Netflix expand to the national market, in order to provide a legal means of viewing their content, although the company have so far only announced plans to enter ‘an additional European market’ in the second half of this year.

A Torrent Freak article on the matter noted: “During the first two days, episode one of Arrested Development topped 175,000 downloads on public BitTorrent trackers. A decent number, but one that pales in comparison to records set by Game of Thrones and other hit series. Unfortunately the download figures by themselves are meaningless without context, so it's hard to draw conclusions on how the Netflix release affected them. From past experience, however, it is safe to say that the numbers would be significantly higher if a show had been released on a premium cable network. After all, in countries where Netflix is available people have little reason to pirate the show. Or do they?”

Fifth-Generation Apple Release Order Revealed

Posted: 30 May 2013 07:47 AM PDT

The annual roll-out schedule of Apple’s leading commercial devices appears to have partially taken shape for 2013, after supply chain sources strongly hinted that the iPad 5 tablet computer will have a release date after that of the iPhone 5S smartphone.

iphone_5s_store_teaserA new report, initially leaked by Japanese technology blog Macotakara, suggests that the long-rumoured tablet computer will make its debut on shelves ‘by Christmas’, although a lot later than the originally-expected date of September, leaving plenty of room for the ‘iPhone 5S’ (pictured) to be released first.

While both products are near-enough confirmed to be carrying the upcoming new iOS7 operating system, there are plenty more ‘credible’ feature rumours surrounding the tablet device in spite of , with sources suggesting that the iPad 5 will carry the capability of telephone calls, due to the implementation of a microphone ‘cellular compatible SIM port’.

Meanwhile, colours for the iPad, as well as the next iPhone, are believed to be more wide-ranging than ’black or white’ predecessors, with gold, grey, and navy blue amongst the hinted options for consumers, a move likely to have been one to try and compete with the more colourful range of products seen with Nokia and Microsoft’s ‘Windows OS’ devices.

The iPad 5 is also anticipated to be ’33% thinner & lighter’ than version 4, while retaining a ’2048 x 1536 retina display’. With an expected 2-3 million units planned for launch roll-out, Apple’s larger product will be one that they hope can keep the company’s presence in the market strong, but will it have enough to compete with ever-developing rivals, or even other devices from their own company?

Flintstones Use WWE As Basis Of Movie Comeback

Posted: 30 May 2013 02:38 AM PDT

While its planned TV series revival into Fox’s Animation Domination programming block has been put on hold indefinitely by Seth MacFarlane, prehistoric-based animated comedy The Flintstones is set to make a comeback, albeit with an unusual twist.

the_rock_wweSet to be a direct-to-DVD film that will also be released on a number of other platforms (Blu-ray, VOD, and digital download) in ‘early 2015′, the project from Warner Bros. will be one that is a co-production with WWE Studios.

The joint production of the classic Hanna-Barbera series will Fred Flintstone and the rest of the main characters joined by a supporting cast that includes ‘John Cenastone’ (voiced by John Cena), ‘CM Punkrock’ (CM Punk), and ’Vince McMagma’ (WWE president Vince McMahon). While currently unconfirmed, not including Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. ‘The Rock’, pictured) in that list of guest stars would be missing a major opportunity.

The plot of the film is said to be taking place around a ‘prehistoric WWE event’, according to Deadline, so is likely to feature a fair bit of cringe-worthy references to the organisation, with such tie-ups usually a difficult feat to pull off story-wise.

Michael Luisi, the president of WWE Studios, said of their reasoning behind the odd choice of collaboration: WWE is family-friendly entertainment, so partnering with Warner Bros. on a Flintstones/WWE project was a natural extension of our Scooby Doo deal. This new, animated feature allows us to showcase our brand with young fans and loyal Flintstones enthusiasts alike.”

Before that release, though, the WWE are participating in another cartoon-based fiction-fiction crossover film, with 2014 due to see the release of Scooby Doo!: Legend of WrestleMania, likely to be a title which has even more of a cheesy integration with the sports entertainment organisation. While The Flintstones fans await the first new content to hit the town of Bedrock for some time, they can sit back and enjoy some of the not-as-glowing references to the WWE’s ‘sport’ from other animated comedies below:

Mozilla Reveal In-House Firefox Tablet Product

Posted: 29 May 2013 11:46 PM PDT

While there is not much room for being a mobile operating system unless you are already one of the world’s top 6, it will not stop some names from trying to make that breakthrough into the realm of market leaders, as American ‘free software’ giants Mozilla plan to release a tablet computer that runs on their own-brand ‘Firefox OS’.

firefoxos_phone_conceptCollaborating with Taiwanese company Foxconn (a.k.a. Hon Hai Precision Industry), best known for being the manufacturers of the iPad, the aim of the new product is to be one that is geared towards the ‘budget’ section of the global tablet computer market, according to CNET.

Rumoured for a 3 June reveal at a Mozilla event, the product will become the first publicly-available item supported by Firefox OS, with the open-source operating system having originally been created with budget smartphones in mind as a future goal, alongside the continuing development of what is mainly an optional download operating system compatible with Android devices.

These goals have so far been performed through the handsets ‘Keon’ and ‘Peak’, for third party app developers, and with Foxconn’s involvement in the latest project making them the 19th company to make use of the operating system, joining names such as Alcatel and Huawei.

It seems, however, that Foxconn’s involvement in the tablet computer will make theirs the most important in the history of Firefox OS, but in a market that has clear dominance by a small number of companies, can the option that “makes the mobile web more accessible to more people” become a success? Failing such a mission, the pair could always go for broke and just recruit as many other partners as possible with the word ‘fox’ in their name somewhere…

The Killing Agreed For Netflix UK Carriage Deal

Posted: 29 May 2013 02:01 PM PDT

While not quite in the realm of ‘online-exclusive’, Netflix’s latest content acquisition will be seen as an important one for fans of AMC crime drama The Killing in the UK & Ireland, as new episodes in the show’s 3rd season will be made available in the region on the streaming platform only.

the_killing_poster_amcAs of 3 June, every new episode of the show will be made available to subscribers every Monday, the day after its American premiere date on AMC.

The first two seasons of The Killing are already accessible through Netflix, though terrestrial channel Channel 4 also hold UK broadcasting rights for those 26 episodes.

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos summarised of the new part of the existing arrangement: “We’re thrilled to be bringing season three of The Killing exclusively to our members in the UK and Ireland. The Killing is an incredibly gripping fan favourite so we wanted to make each new episode available as soon as possible.”

The Killing, starring Mireille Enos (Big Love) and Billy Campbell (Once and Again), is an American adaptation of popular Danish drama Forbrydelsen (‘The Crime’), and having been revived from an original killing-off by the cable station after two seasons, will the new episodes now be a quick hit throughout the English-speaking market thanks to this deal?

BBC iPlayer Radio Develops As iPlayer Video Audience Falls

Posted: 29 May 2013 12:08 PM PDT

Following the very strong figures of 2013 and even stronger start to the current calendar year, the BBC iPlayer appears to have hit its peak for a while in terms of viewer count on the catch-up service, after it was revealed that the number of ‘view requests’ in April dropped to 257 million for April.

margaret_thatcher_funeralWhile requests for live coverage of the funeral of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was a large draw for the streaming platform in the month, it was not enough to prevent the lowest overall view count since December 2012, leading off from the joint-record 272m recorded in March. The BBC, however, claim that the iPlayer is performing well in spite of the circumstances, as Easter holidays and more daylight were recognized as likely and predictable reasons for such a decline.

The Margaret Thatcher funeral, however, bucked the trend for April when it became the ‘second most-requested live TV broadcast’ in the iPlayer’s history with 832,000 live viewers (of a total ’+catch-up’ audience of 986,000), beaten only by events at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Breaking down the overall figures, it was recognized that average ‘daily requests’ on iPlayer hit 7.9m, while 57m per week were recorded in April’s second and third weeks. Mobile and tablet users, meanwhile, were collectively responsible for 75 million views, representing 30% of the total figures.

The presence of the BBC’s iPlayer Radio platform also had a strong month, rising to a service record of 74 million requests in one month (an increase of 3% on the 72 million of March), although 84% of those were ‘live’ listeners. In a further development for the spin-off service, the broadcaster has announced that users will soon be able to download radio shows available on iPlayer, with similar ’30 day’ content restrictions as applied to the free videos offered by iPlayer.

With listeners currently only able to stream radio for up to 7 days post-broadcast (excluding BBC podcasts), the BBC Trust have confirmed plans to launch radio downloads in 2014.

A BBC spokesman summarised of the move, expected to cost £150,000 due to implementing a new digital rights management (DRM) system: “We are delighted with the Trust’s decision. We will now start work to bring download functionality to BBC iPlayer Radio, a process which we anticipate will take some months yet.”

With up to 7,600 hours of radio content each week due to become available for download, is iPlayer’s first spin-off set to become even more evenly-matched in numbers with its big brother following these developments?

Radio streaming on the BBC iPlayer continues to grow, with a record-breaking 74 million requests in April, up 3% on March’s 72 million requests.

National Geographic Kill Kennedy In New TV Movie

Posted: 29 May 2013 08:52 AM PDT

While the assassination of former US President John F. Kennedy in 1963 is a moment which as been used countless times by many productions in the fields of cinema, documentaries, and TV shows, and it appears as though there is still plenty more adaptations on the subject to come, with the newest likely to coincide with its 50th anniversary.

o'reilly_factorThe TV movie Killing Kennedy, a project commissioned by National Geographic, is adapted from a non-fiction book on the Kennedy assassination by political TV presenter Bill O’Reilly. This film, due to begin production in Richmond (Virginia, USA) in June, has already appointed its leading cast members, with Rob Lowe playing the titular president, while Ginnifer Goodwin will portray first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

The Hollywood Reporter also notes that Michelle Trachtenberg has been confirmed as on the cast list, with her appearance set to be as Marina Oswald (wife of Kennedy’s alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald) in a ‘Russian-speaking role’.

National Geographic Channels president Howard T. Owens summarised: “We are thrilled to be working with Rob Lowe, Ginnifer Goodwin and Michelle Trachtenberg, three gifted artists whom have responded to this timely, authentic and entertaining material. With Killing Kennedy, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK, National Geographic Channel continues to bring daring, culturally significant television events to our growing global audience.”

Having previously been responsible for adapting Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Lincoln book to a TV film earlier this year (to the effect of 3.4m viewers), National Geographic seem to be as fond of converting O’Reilly’s works to made-for-TV movies as much as O’Reilly is fond of writing about presidential assassinations… and getting mad at teleprompters:

Pay TV Household Numbers Rise By 8%

Posted: 29 May 2013 06:25 AM PDT

As viewership of TV content in all its guises continues to grow steadily, from one source or another, the market of ‘pay-TV’ is now under the microscope, as the Multimedia Research Group (MRG) note that the market has grown by 8% since the same point in 2012.

multimedia_research_group_logoThe study conducted by the group noted that the number of ‘pay-TV subscriber households’ around the world (covering cable, satellite, and IPTV services) now totals 804 million. Like many markets studied in such surveys, the ‘Asia-Pacific’ region is the one which experienced the most growth, with over 38m new households registering with such a service, two-thirds of all new memberships around the world in 2012.

Contrasting this, it was found that the more developed regions for pay-tv grew very little over the past 12 months, with ‘North America’ remaining on around 112 million households (a very small increase from the previous year), while ‘Western Europe’ saw a rise close to 3%. Neither are anticipated to have widespread increases in the coming years.

Breaking down the findings further, it was noted that for cable TV (which has worldwide presence in 520m households), key emerging Asia-Pacific national markets such as China, India and Vietnam led the way in current growth, while Western Europe and North America again experienced ‘little or no growth’. IPTV services (representing 77m subscriptions) rose in presence 36% and a strong growth in all regions, while satellite TV (207m) held a solid growth of 12%, and its most prominent development in India and Russia.

In addition, it was found that of the total estimated 1.43 billion households that currently have TV connection, 56% are also subscribers to a pay-TV platform.

An MRG statement on their discoveries read: “Even with the ongoing debate about the value of pay-TV services versus the cost of pay-TV services, one thing remains clear: Consumers around the world love to watch TV, and they remain both ready and willing to pay for it. Despite the threats of ‘cord cutting’ or alternative TV distribution technologies, we expect pay-TV service providers will, for the foreseeable future, continue to be the leading players in the delivery of TV services to the home.

“Looking out over the next few years, we expect to see sustained growth in demand for pay-TV services. In fact, by 2017, we are projecting worldwide pay-TV subscriber households to pass the 1 billion mark. Most of this growth will likely be driven by the increasing availability of satellite TV and IPTV services, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Comic Book Writer Claims Google Glass Is First Step To Cyborgs

Posted: 29 May 2013 04:27 AM PDT

With the Google Glass product making its final adjustments ahead of a release later this year, public opinion on the product continues to be split, with many claiming that it is an invasion of privacy for many reasons, in particular the features that enable cameras to covertly see what its wearer is seeing, with the potential to film or photograph such images.

grant_morrison_glassOthers, though, such as comic book writer Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman, Batman Incorporated), have claimed that features such as those will soon become a natural and accepted part of society if products such as Google Glass become big enough, as they are a step in the ‘evolution’ towards humans becoming superhumans or cyborgs.

Morrison claimed that he believed the new ‘wearable technology’ will make its users “half-fish, half-man,” and that in a ’super-connected’ world, privacy concerns will be a thing of the past.

In an interview with CNET, Morrison theorised: “The big superhuman leap is in the communications technology. If you’ve looked at the phone like it’s an organism. First it fits in your hand, then your ear, then your eye, and then the back of your head. Skynet’s about to become self-aware, but it’s not going to nuke us, it’s going to f**k us. Glass is an intermediary stage. It’s half-fish, half-man. Like the Victorian malodorous super-accordion, it bridges the gap.

“When you’re connected to everyone and everything, it’ll be the end of privacy, of the dual self. It’ll be like a snowflake, and the snowfall is more important than the flake. Everybody will have seen your naked pictures, and nobody will care. There’s no terror at all, it’ll just be the way things are. It’ll change the way that people will look at themselves as an organism, a human organism.”

While the comments will have to be taken with a grain of salt on account of his lack of professional authority, are the comic book writer’s claims valid ones, or will this be a quote which people selectively recite, if at all?

Psych Finale Recaplet: Don't You Forget About Me

Posted: 29 May 2013 08:44 PM PDT

Filmdom’s erstwhile Brian “The Nerd” Johnson made big, bad waves in the Psych Season 7 finale. Does this mean Gus, Shawn et al will be singing the blues in December’s musical episode?

RELATED | Hot for Summer! Your Guide to 125 Premiere and Finale Dates

Onetime Breakfast Clubber/Dead Zone psychic Anthony Michael Hall guest-starred as Harris “Is that a family name?” Trout, a former police chief/Badge & Honor consultant who’s been enlisted to crack the whip with Chief Vick’s team in the wake of a public display of crimesolving excess.

As the hour unfolds, Gus and Shawn recount how they caught the case in question — some nebbishy guy wanting to find the guys who poisoned him — and it takes a good, long while until they get to the part where they, you know, loop in the SBPD.

The twist in the case (I shan’t spoil it here) was one that anyone who has ever seen a TV procedural before saw coming down State Street. And though our guys eventually wound up nabbing the proper perp, Trout had seen more than enough to make a case for suspending Vick for six months, though she took the news rather well.

Annnnnd then the other shoes dropped: Under psychic-hating Trout’s purview, the SBPD would no longer be availing itself of Psych’s services. Lassiter has been demoted as head detective. McNab also got canned.

But hey, at least there’s the musical episode to anticipate… some six months from now. (The premiere date for the shortened Season 8 has yet to be announced.)

Here now a few quotables, a list to which y’all will assuredly add, and then your comments.

* Shawn tallying the 100 homicides solved by the SBPD/Psych team, to which Trout can only note “a lack of deterrent” given the town’s “Murder Capital” status.

* “Things just got hairy, Santa Barbara-style.”

* Lassiter too-briefly taking command of the narration, positing himself as a David Caruso-like, Ray Bans-flipping crime solver: “Looks like we’ve got Fifty Shades of Grey… Matter.”

* Shawn and Gus arguing if there ever was a “bad episode of CHiPs.”

* “You said it was cake mix!” –  a distraught/disgusted Jules, upon realizing that Shawn had inadvertently dumped cremation ashes all over her.

* “I actually dance by the name Morningwood.”

* Shawn advising the killer that he’s been “upgraded to place just like Oz.” “Except,” Gus adds, “there is no wizard.” Um….

* At episode’s end, a steely Gus declaring, “It’s on now” — if only because Trout had appropriated his “Suuuuuuck Ittttt!” theme song.

What were your favorite moments from Psych‘s Season 7 finale?

Netflix Is Open to More Arrested Development — Are You? And How Many Eps Have You Watched?

Posted: 29 May 2013 05:28 PM PDT

If the funny folks behind Arrested Development decide to make more dysfunctional family magic, they’ll have at least one home at which to do so.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings on Wednesday said that while there are currently no official plans for a fifth “season” of the revived cult comedy (the second on the pay streaming service), it’s certainly not out of the question.

VIDEO | Arrested Development: Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi and More Preview Season 4

Arrested is unique because that's really up to the talent,” Hastings shared on CNBC. “If the talent were willing to do more… I’m sure we would be willing.” (Though Netflix famously refuses to release viewership data, Hastings said that AD sampling has been “huge, just as we had hoped.”)

If what Jason Bateman recently told TVLine is any indication, the gang is in — and already planning — for more.

“This [season is] just 15 episodes that serve as Act 1 of a three-act story,” he explained during a pre-premiere interview. “Those other two acts will be in the future; whether they’re a movie or back on Netflix, I don’t know. People smarter than me will figure that out.”

So, smart people, get to figurin’!

Do you want more Bluth-y goodness on Netflix? Or should Mitch Hurwitz & Co. jump to the big screen as originally planned, to spin a more linear story? Hit the comments!

Is Mad Men Getting Ready to Kill Off Megan?

Posted: 29 May 2013 01:22 PM PDT

Zou Bisou goodbye?

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner might be trying to tell us something really disturbing.

Megan’s choice of nightwear in the AMC drama last Sunday – a white t-shirt emblazoned with a huge red star – is identical to one Sharon Tate wore in a 1967 Esquire magazine photo shoot.

And that, as a post on Uproxx recently pointed out (taking off from a Reddit discussion), is reason enough to start fearing for the To Have and to Hold star’s future.

RELATED | Hot for Summer! Your Guide to 125 Upcoming Premiere and Finale Dates

Tate, an actress and model who was married to director Roman Polanski, was murdered in her home in 1969 by followers of Charles Manson. The shocking killing spree also ended the lives of six others and gave Manson (who was later convicted) and his “family” a gruesome cult status.

Given Season 6′s focus on the rising fear and insecurity in late ’60s Manhattan, coupled with the fictional Mrs. Draper’s parallels to the real Sharon, the Megan-in-danger theory has its merits. To wit:

• Megan is an up-and-coming actress. Sharon Tate was an up-and-coming actress.

• Megan has been pregnant – albeit briefly – and may be wanting more children. Sharon Tate’s pregnancy was nearly to term when she was killed.

• Mad Men‘s Season 6 poster, which features police officers at what might (?) be a crime scene, holding tight to their billy clubs as though the threat of danger is very near.

• This season has made a point of highlighting random acts of violence (such as Abe’s stabbing — not by Peggy, the one outside the subway) and home invasion (such as when Sally caught “Grandma Ida” rifling through Don and Megan’s apartment). Maybe it’s all ramping up to a huge, horrible moment for a SCDP fave?

• In the home-invasion episode, Sally is shown reading Rosemary’s Baby. Polanski directed the film adaptation. (Thanks to commenter Sophie for that one!)

RELATEDMad Men Photos: The Cast Dresses for (Stunning) Success

We propose a corollary: What if the focus on Megan is to divert attention from the upcoming, untimely demise of a different character? Remember, though Pete waxed depressed and fondled his rifle and Don doodled a noose in the margins of his notes last season, it was Lane who wound up hanging from his office ceiling in the penultimate episode. Yes, Weiner loves symbolism, but he also really digs a misdirect.

Enough of what we think. What’s your take on the macabre Mad Men theory? Sound off in the comments!

Erstwhile The Following baddie/Common Lawman Warren Kole has nabbed a recurring role in Season 5 of the USA Network drama, HuffPostTV reports.

RELATED | Happy Endings Axed By ABC — Next Stop USA?

Kole will play Agent David Seigel, Neal’s overly ambitious new FBI handler who takes over for the now-jailed Peter.

The Americans’ Richard Thomas will also guest-star in the new season (premiering this fall), playing the patriarch of a wealthy family.

Ready for more of today’s TV dish? Well…

• Turns out, Katie Couric was approached about returning to the Today show in the wake of a recent decrease in ratings. “There were some cautious overtures to me to possibly come back,” she revealed Tuesday during an appearance on Howard Stern’s radio show. When asked if she’d seriously consider a comeback, Couric coyly responded, “For me, that was the best job.”

• Community fave Yvette Nicole Brown is returning to TV Land’s The Soul Man, The Hollywood Reporter reports, reprising her role as the Ballentines’ former neighbor. Season 2 of the TV Land comedy bows June 19.

The new series will debut on Amazon Prime Instant Video later this year or in early 2014.

So You Think You Can Dance Recap: The 5 Best Boston Auditions! (Vote for Your Faves!)

Posted: 29 May 2013 11:42 AM PDT

So You Think You Can Dance‘s Boston audition stop was a cause for celebration — and not just because it featured a gal with a lampshade on her head, a hunk willing to flash his torso upon request and Mary Murphy hollerating like a Red Sox fan with the score tied at the bottom of the ninth.

No sirree, the two-hour episode turned into party central thanks to a deep and ridiculously diverse pool of talent — with ballroom, hip-hop, ballet and contemporary all on brilliant display. And while it was a near impossible task to narrow it down to the five best auditions, please bear with my humble attempts below…

Honorable Mention: John Tesoriero, whose “water plink” moves synchronized to a live beat boxer filled me with joy; Alexis Juliano, who somehow made “Mr. Bojangles” feel like cinematic; Jennifer James, who’s just too beautiful to be believed (Mary Murphy: “I JUST LOVE HER FACE!”); and Shannon ‘Shizzy Shake’ Tarantino, whose punkish looks juxtaposed intriguingly with her ethereral, almost angelic movements. (I really wanted to make Shannon No. 5, but how could I deny Anthony?)

5) Anthony Savoy | No one from his dance company knew he was auditioning, but there’s no way they could be too bitter after he brought his avian-like elegance to the program through leaps and spins that will be sure to inspire folks like Sonya and Mia in the weeks and months to come.

4) Toshi Nakazawa | I worried SYTYCD was setting him up as some kind of unfunny ESL joke, but nope: Dude’s animated moves were wickedly creative and entertaining. When he went prone on the stage and waves of music “pulsed” through his body, I found myself clapping like a ridiculous seal.

3) Jennie Begley | Who else felt the sweet rush of tears after Jennie’s brother — who paid to fly the struggling ballerina from Colorado — leapt to his feet to celebrate her dark and theatrical audition? Mary was right: This chick’s lines are mesmerizing!

2) Kate Kapshandy | Nigel was right: This whirling, highly sexualized ballroom dervish could start as a DWTS pro tomorrow — and give the ABC ballroom competish’s sagging ratings, maybe she should! I let out a chuckle of delight the moment Kate strutted out from the wings with the kind of confidence that’s rare during a reality competition audition, and seeing Season 5′s Max Kapitannikov as her partner was a nice bonus. Hard to imagine she won’t go far into Season 10 — provided she’s got versatility, too.

1) Tommy Tibball | It’s funny Nigel mentioned past SYTYCD standouts Jakob and Billy, since Tommy’s incredible expression and extension immediately called those fellas to mind. And oh man, that piroutte just went on and on and on — without ever losing its form. Tommy doesn’t have the loudest of personalities, but I felt like the world fell silent when he extended his leg back and over his head (pictured). Being supercute won’t hurt him, either.

And with that, let me turn things over to you. What did you think of last night's SYTYCD? Who was your favorite auditioner? Take our poll, sound off in the comments, and for all my reality TV news, interviews, and recaps, follow me on Twitter @MichaelSlezakTV!

Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln on New Romance for Rick: '[Spoiler] Would Be Deeply Upset'

Posted: 29 May 2013 10:32 AM PDT

What are the rules of bereavement during a zombie apocalypse?

That provocative question has to be on the minds of Robert Kirkman and his fellow Walking Dead scribes as they head into Season 4 — and get further away from last year’s grisly death of Sarah Wayne Callies’ Lori. (Rumor has it the new season will pick up 4-8 months after Season 3 left off, which would have Rick closing in on his first anniversary as a single dad.)

RELATED | Walking Dead Season 4 Casting News: Wire Alum to Play [Spoiler]

For his part, Andrew Lincoln is of the opinion that Rick is not quite ready to entertain a new relationship. “I think that there has to be some kind of mourning time,” the actor told TVLine earlier this month just as production on Season 4 was getting underway. “I don’t think he’s able to engage at all on that level at the moment. I wouldn’t rule it out though.”

Lincoln then added with a chuckle, “I think Sarah Wayne Callies would be phoning me deeply upset if anything like that would be happening in Season 4.”

PHOTOS | The Walking Dead: 15 Most Memorable Moments of Season 3

Calling the Season 4 premiere “terrific,” Lincoln expressed confidence in new showrunner Scott Gimple, although he admitted to maintaining a safe distance from what goes on behind-the-scenes. “We sort of go off and get into this bubble in Atlanta,” he explained. “It's all about storytelling for me. If the words are good then, you know, it's our job to make them ring true. All of the other stuff… I'm just a cowboy. I don't wear the suits. I don't get involved in all of that kind of stuff. There's nowhere to park my horse.”

TVLine hits rewind on the TV season's biggest "What Happens Next" finales, then invites you to predict the cliffhanger outcomes

ABC’s Nashville didn’t leave much on the table as its freshman season skidded to a close. In fact, as we have previously quipped, all that was missing was Tandy getting abducted by a UFO.

You had Juliette mourning Jolene’s scandalous death by braving the CMAs, then later discovering the truth about — and coming to terms with — her momma’s selfless act. Teddy learned that off-kilter Peggy was preggy. Newbie Will demonstrated his resolve to ascend the country music ladder by suppressing his sexuality.

BBC Deny Doctor Who Racism Reports

Posted: 29 May 2013 03:02 AM PDT

While Doctor Who is at the forefront of English-speaking media attention for TV shows in its 50th year, not all of the attention has been positive, after broadcasters the BBC have had to come out in response to comments from an ‘academic group’ that claim the cult sci-fi series to be ‘thunderously racist’.

peterdavison_doctor5The essays, entitled ‘Doctor Who & Race‘ suggest that the long-running series has racist undertones on account of ‘failing to cast a black or Asian actor’ in the titular role, while various incarnations of the character himself had been ‘dismissive of black companions’. The use of Adolf Hitler as a character last year was also put under scrutiny, claiming the appearance to be ‘slapstick', and ‘doing nothing to increase understanding of the Holocaust’.

Also targeted in the reports are the ‘outdated attitudes’ of the show, with suggestions that primitive cultures featured in episodes are portrayed as ‘savage’. Even the earlier years of Doctor Who could not escape in spite of the semi-passable excuse of ‘a different time’, with criticism aimed at ‘the casting of white actors in ethnic roles’ (an example being John Bennett portraying a Chinese villain in 1977 story arc ‘The Talons Of Weng-Chiang’), the portrayal of the ‘Fifth Doctor’ by Peter Davison as a ‘cricket lover’, symbolising ’racial and class nostalgia of British Imperialism’.

Lindy Orthina, the editor of the anthology, summarised: “The biggest elephant in the room is the problem privately nursed by many fans of loving a TV show when it is thunderingly racist.”

The BBC, like a huge majority of people hearing about this story, are of the belief that the accusations are ‘ridiculous’ and ‘groundless’, with the public broadcaster quick to indicate the ‘diverse casting’ that was based on acting ability alone rather than trying to fulfil any ‘ethnicity quota’, as a statement read: “Doctor Who has a strong track record of diverse casting among both regular and guest cast. Freema Agyeman became the first black companion and Noel Clarke starred in a major role for five years [Mickey Smith]. Reflecting the diversity of the UK is a duty of the BBC, and casting on Doctor Who is colour-blind. It is always about the best actors for the roles.”

While it is clear which way side many people will take in this case (especially since the ‘facts’ reported by the academics speak for themselves), will the show be able to pull through without damage from this ‘controversy’? The group really should look to quickly put this entire episode of accusations behind them, and adopt a serious anthem that they can rally behind, such as this one, which ironically enough is performed by a ‘doctor’ (no, not that one, or that one):

President Trump Planned For 2016

Posted: 29 May 2013 01:47 AM PDT

In America, a common saying made to popular people is ‘you should run for president’. Whether that statement is altered to accommodate a less important local role (mayor, class president, etc.), it appears as though some people, somewhere have recited the original version to Celebrity Apprentice star and businessman Donald Trump, who is now said to be planning a candidacy for 2016.

president_trumpHaving previously considered launching a bid against Barack Obama in the 2012 election process, 66-year-old Trump, a long-time supporter of the Republican party, commissioned researchers to undertake a $1m research programme in ‘exploratory studies’ on running for national office.

Trump is also noted as having attended many more Republican rallies than usual in ‘recent months’, and recently spoke out against the ‘poor campaign’ of the Republican Party’s Mitt Romney for 2012, despite having supported him throughout the process.

The entrepreneur’s ‘special counsel’ Michael Cohen said of the studies undertaken: “The electoral research was commissioned. We did not spend $1 million on this research for it just to sit on my bookshelf. At this point Mr Trump has not made any decision on a political run, but what I would say is that he is exactly what this country needs. The turnout at these political speeches indicates his following remains very strong and is growing.”

Cohen added that as per the rules of presidency, a candidate naturally cannot have any conflicting business interests, and as such Trump will be forced to: “…turn over control of his company either to one or all of his children or to a trust,” in the event of confirming his running.

However, Trump’s recent appearances at Republican rallies have quashed the rumours somewhat, as he is on record as having said: “Everybody tells me, ‘Please run for president. Please run for president.’ I would be much happier if a great and competent person came along. I’d be happy if President Obama did a great job. I’m a Republican, but before anything, I love this country. I would love to see somebody come in who is going to be great.”

Despite this, experts might still be of the belief that given his track record over the past few years, Trump will take up the challenge, which of course would be a crazy thing to even consider. Since when has a celebrity ever managed to become their country’s leader?

Vudu For iOS Gets Movie Download Option For Offline Viewing

The Vudu pay to view, rent or buy movie service has had an iOS update. The Walmart owned service which operates like iTunes, and boasts more HD titles than any other service, now lets buyers download content and watch offline.vudu-downloads

Previously the service on iOS was a stream only service needing an internet connection to use.

The new download feature for Version 2 of the Vudu Player iOS App brings a feature that many would expect anyway for a premium service and may explain why many consumers are unaware of Vudu.

The update already available on android phones also brings iphone closed captioning support, new look video player and other minor tweaks and bugs fixes.

But it is the ability to download and watch Vudu/Ultraviolet titles offline on iPad and iPhone that will have most rushing to download the update.

Vudu which runs on many connected devices including PS3, Roku PC and Blu-ray players say that the list of new features in V.2 include:-

• You can now download and watch your collection of movies and TV shows offline.
• We've listened to your feedback and made the Player easier to use.
• Closed Captioning for the iPhone is now supported. (Closed captioning is already supported for iPad).
• General bug fixes have been applied.

Vudu users can grab the new update from the iTunes app store right now.

More than two-and-a-half years after separating, Courteney and David are officially divorced.

In October 2010, Courteney Cox, 48, and David Arquette, 41, surprised everyone when they announced that they were separating after more than 10 years of marriage. The couple waited until June 2012 to officially file for divorce.

Courteney Cox & David Arquette Officially Divorced

On May 28, an LA County Superior Court Judge entered a final judgement for the divorce, and officially ended the couple’s 12-year marriage.

The couple share an 8-year-old daughter, Coco. In the filing, they both requested joint legal and physical custody of their daughter.

Courteney Cox & David Arquette Relationship Timeline

Courteney and David first met in 1996 on the set of the movie Scream, and were married on June 12, 1999. In June 2004, the couple welcomed their first child together, Coco.

On October 11, 2010, Courteney and David announced they were separating. At the time, Courteney assured everyone that the separation was only temporary.

“I don't know what will happen, but this is not like we're getting divorced,” Courteney told TV Week. "This is a separation and I think that takes a lot of courage. Whatever is supposed to happen will be the best thing for us.” She added, “Sometimes you just realize, 'Wow, we actually have grown apart.’”

In June 2012, David took the next step by filing for divorce after nearly two years of separation.

Although the couple is now divorced, they’ve pledged to remain friends and raise their daughter together.

Boston Bombing Victim Voted Prom Queen — So Sweet

Posted: 29 May 2013 05:36 PM PDT

After Sydney Corcoran was severely injured in the Boston Marathon bombing attack, she made a goal for herself: attend her high school prom. Not only did the 18-year-old accomplish her goal, she also took home the crown as her school’s Prom Queen!

On April 20, Sydney Corcoran was injured in the explosion at the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured more than 170 people. The explosion severed Sydney’s femoral artery, but thanks to the kindhearted strangers who came to Sydney’s rescue, her life was saved.

Sydney Corcoran Voted Prom Queen After Boston Bombing Attack

Just weeks after the explosion, Sydney embraced her second chance at life by attending her prom at Lowell High School on May 28. Although Sydney had to use crutches at the dance, she didn’t let her injury stop her from having a great time and earning the title of Prom Queen.

“When I was in the hospital, I didn’t think this was going to be possible and I got to the rehab and, because I was up and I was doing stuff, it felt more like I could do it. And it was a goal,” Sydney said of attending her high school prom.

“I keep feeling like I’m going to cry cause I’m just happy to be back,” Sydney told Today about reuniting with her classmates. “See now I’m going to start crying! It’s just really good to see everyone.”

Sydney was standing with her mother Celeste Corcoran at the finish line waiting for her aunt to finish the race when the bombs went off. Celeste tragically lost both of her legs below the knee, while Sydney’s legs were shredded and severely damaged by the explosion.

After the horrific blast, Sydney and her family received nearly $500,000 in donations from people all over the world to help pay for their medical and rehabilitation costs.

After winning the Prom Queen crown, Sydney has one more goal she wants to accomplish: to walk across the stage at her high school graduation.

Robert Pattinson: His New Type Of Girl Revealed

Posted: 29 May 2013 04:47 PM PDT

Now that Rob and Kristen have broken up, a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that Rob has his eye on a totally different type of girl!

Robert Pattinson, 27, spent the past five years dating Kristen Stewart, a gorgeous, brunette beauty with a tomboy streak. Now that the couple has split, a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that Rob has become a fan of a different kind of girl who is totally opposite of Kristen!

Robert Pattinson’s New Type: Blondes Have More Fun

“His type now is definitely blonde — it looks like he's moving as far away from K-Stew as possible,” the source reveals.

This isn’t the first time Rob has had an eye for blondes. When Rob and Kristen first split last summer, Rob had a fling with a sexy blonde waitress.

After filming Cosmopolis, Rob stayed friends with his beautiful blonde co-star, Sarah Gadon. Now that Kristen and Rob have ended things, will Rob and Sarah’s relationship turn into a romance?

Rob was also recently spotted out partying with some friends, including a blonde beauty!

Robert Pattinson Doesn't Want One Night Stands After Kristen Stewart

Although Rob is open to dating new women, a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that he’s not looking to sleep around.

“As for other girls, he isn't sleeping with anyone yet, because he likes to have an emotional connection first,” the source reveals.

Robert Pattinson Fell Out Of Love With Kristen Stewart After 'Twilight'

It appears that Rob and Kristen broke up for several reasons, and a source tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that their relationship lacked romance after Twilight ended.

"They don't have a Twilight movie to return to; when they had those movies they fell back into why they fell in love in the first place," a source reveals. "It just felt right that they were a couple during the filming of those films."

The source explains that Rob and Kristen's problems are similar to The Bachelor:

Imagine being on The Bachelor and not looking for love. When Kristen and Rob were filming the Twilight series, this was where they fell in love. It was like going back to a honeymoon or renewing their vows. They don't have that now, so add that with the other stuff, and you can see why their relationship has strained.

‘The Voice’: Sarah Simmons & Judith Hill Should Have Made It To The End

Posted: 29 May 2013 03:59 PM PDT

On the May 28 episode of ‘The Voice,’ everyone was shocked by the elimination of Team Adam’s Sarah and Judith. However, I’m wondering how it happened to begin with.

Adam Levine clearly wasn’t thrilled that two of his team members were in the bottom, forcing him to mumble a not-so-positive statement – but I don’t really blame him for being upset!

Judith Hill Eliminated — ‘The Voice’ Loses One Of The Best Singers Yet

In my mind, Michael Jackson is most likely rolling over in his grave. Judith Hill, backup singer and friend of MJ, was cut from The Voice last night along with front runner Sarah Simmons.

Judith and Sarah were definitely the two most talented singers in the competition.

Judith’s super powerful voice turned the chairs of all four judges  when she took on Christina Aguilera‘s “What a Girl Wants.” She actually turned Adam’s chair, before he climbed on top of it and applauded.

“You are the first person that's ever come on this show an done a Christina song as well as Christina Aguilera,” Adam said. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm running for President right now.”

Her different style won everyone over, including me. There’s no way that 16-year-old Danielle Bradbery or Holly Tucker — both of whom I really like — had a stronger voice.

Sarah Simmons Elimination — Her Voice Was The Perfect Combination

After Sarah’s audition, all four coaches were literally begging her to be on their team. When she belted out “One Of Us,” she impressed all the judges with her mix of soft singing and intense rasp.

“Please, please, please,” Adam begged Sarah.

And that was enough for her apparently. Well, who wouldn’t it be enough for?

While I really love the contestants that made the top six, Blake’s entire country team does not have the talent that these two girls have. No offense to The Swon Brothers, who are very talented, but unfortunately they sound like most other country stars.

What do YOU think HollywoodLifers? Do you think that Judith and Sarah should have at least made the top six?

Joe Jonas Getting Married To Blanda Eggenschwiler?

“Joe definitely is in love and has had the conversation about marriage with his brother [Kevin Jonas] who has a successful marriage,” the source explains. “He has been talking about it with Blanda as well.”

Joe Jonas Denies Sex Tape Rumors

Although Joe and Blanda are totally in love, Joe made it clear that the rumors that the couple filmed a raunchy sex tape together are not true.

Kim Kardashian, 32, has finally embraced her pregnancy curves, and let her baby bump breathe in a flowy striped summer dress during an outing in Santa Monica, Calif. on May 28.

Kim Kardashian’s Summer Dress — Hides Baby Bump Behind Empire Waist Frock

Kim left her uncomfortable heels at home when she opted for a pair of chic black sandals to top off her fun summer look. The pregnant Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, who is due with her first baby with boyfriend Kanye West, 35, in July, topped off her look with a dark blazer and signature black Berkin bag.

The gorgeous mom-to-be also kept her beauty look simple and sleek with her gorgeous dark hair half-pulled back. Her makeup also looked flawless and natural, and played up her pregnancy glow.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West Have Sex In Front Of Ray J In Porn Spoof

Posted: 29 May 2013 03:36 PM PDT

HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY obtained the plot of the ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ sex tape spoof — and fake Kim and her fake family do some pretty racy things!

Kim Kardashian and her family are set to get spoofed in new porn film, and HollywoodLife.com can exclusively reveal that it is more X rated than you’d expect! In the sexy spoof of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim and Kanye West get down and dirty in front of her ex Ray J, Kourtney Kardashian gets in on some girl-on-girl action, and Kris Jenner does something you’d never expect!

Full Description Of The ‘KUWTK’ Sex Tape

Kris (Veronica Av Luv) is determined to do whatever it takes to get her failing daughter from a F to a A in her chemistry class. She seduces shy chemistry nerd teacher (Richie Calhoun) with her dominating words and sexual ways.

Kourtney (Yuri Beltran) shows up in a very bad mood to the clothing store. A flirty young female employee (Andy San Dimas) talks her into trying on lingerie to relax. The girls hook up in dressing room. Scott Disick (Seth Gamble) shows up to find the girls having sex, and he yells at employee to get out and take care of a customer in the store so he jumps in and finishes what she started.

Khloe Kardashian (Allison Moore), who does everything for her husband, is furious that he hasn’t made one free throw in the first half of his game. She sneaks into the locker room during halftime to find her husband Lamar Odom (Lexington Steele) alone and depressed. Scolding him, she asks what she can do to get him to play better in the second half. He tells her what he wants and the couple have a hot and heavy sex scene in the locker room, finishing right before his coach (Marcus London) enters the locker room.

Ray J (John Johnson) is at the studio recording, and he walks down the hallway to peep another studio room, where he sees Kim (Kiara Mia) sitting there watching Kanye (Flash Brown) record a song. Ray J enters room jealous and outraged, yelling at Kanye, and he is quickly punched and knocked out cold. Kim is so turned on by Kanye knocking out Ray J, that she and Kanye have sex scene in recording studio as Ray J is on the floor knocked out cold.

This is totally shocking! While Kim and her family are no certainly no wallflowers, this treatment of them seems pretty ridiculous!

What do YOU think HollywoodLifers? Are YOU shocked by this description of the sex tape? Would you watch it?

Kanye West Not Mad At Will Smith For Bashing The Kardashians

Posted: 29 May 2013 03:30 PM PDT

Will inadvertently dissed the Kardashians, and HollywoodLife.com has Kanye’s exclusive — and surprising — reaction!

Kanye West and Will Smith have been friends for years, and now that Will has indirectly bashed the Kardashian crew, Kanye has an interesting take on all the drama.

What Kanye Thinks Of Will’s Remarks

“Kanye knows Will personally and [doesn't think] Will meant any disrespect to Kim or her family,” a source close to Kanye tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “He didn’t even say anything about Kim or her family. He’s a veteran at this and even if he meant it about them, he didn’t say [anything] directly about them.”

Both Kanye and mother-to-be Kim Kardashian love Will and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, our source tells us. They’re huge fans of the Smith family’s work.

Kanye & Kim Respect Will

“Will is old school,” our source explains. “He’s from Philly, and [he's] been in this entertainment game way before anyone knew Kanye or Kim’s names. He’s been acting and putting out hit music since Ye was a kid. So for that, Ye and Kim got mad love and respect for him.”

The supposed feud between Will and the Kardashians began when he indirectly slamedms the family for “orchestrating the media” and being obsessed with fame in an interview with Vulture.

The reporter asked Will's 14-year-old son Jaden Smith about his rumored romance with Kylie Jenner – but before Jaden could get a word out, Will interrupted!

Will Indirectly Blasts The Kardashians

He explained:

For our family, the entire structure of our life, our home, our business relationships — the entire purpose is for everyone to be able to create in a way that makes them happy. Fame is almost an inconsequential by-product of what we're really trying to accomplish. We are trying to put great things into the world, we're trying to have fun, and we're trying to become the greatest versions of ourselves in the process of doing things we love. So the idea of fame or exploitation or orchestrating the media is sometimes even less than desirable for us.

Sound off, HollywoodLifers. Do you agree with Kanye who says this whole thing is a giant misunderstanding?

The Mad Men Fashion File - In Between

Posted: 29 May 2013 07:18 AM PDT

mm609-megan-560.jpg

Could designer Janie Bryant have chosen a better costume to open "The Better Half" than Peggy's split-seam jacket? It neatly divides her into two pieces, which is great because she's torn professionally (Don vs. Ted), socially (work life vs. home life), and emotionally (boss vs. boyfriend). With this costume, Peggy isn't wearing her heart on her sleeve -- she's wearing it across her entire chest. If I had to place a bet, I'd say she's sticking to Team Chaough: After all, he's wearing a yellow shirt that coordinates with her mustard-hued dress. Don's still in black, white, and gray.

The "split in two" theme continues with Megan's new blonde wig, and her soap opera role as twins who are "two halves of the same person. They want the same thing, but they're trying to get it in different ways." Which sounds a lot like Megan and Peggy... or Joan and Peggy... or even Don and Betty, who clearly "out" themselves as twisted soul mates during their tryst. Since each bares a piece of themselves to the other, it's fitting they're both literally bare. And one more brilliant match-up in this episode: Roger Sterling and his grandson are dressed in big-and-little versions of the same suit. When Margaret fumes about letting "a four year old watch another four year old," she has the visual to prove it.
